VW digital service history and the service schedule

A VW’s digital service history can help you check the maintenance behind a used-car advert. Our VIN-based report supplies the available dealer-record information in a PDF, so you can compare dated entries with invoices and the seller’s description of the car.

VW UK’s servicing FAQ states that its vehicles moved from physical service books to digital records from May 2017. Earlier paperwork may still be essential. VW also describes independent repairers entering work through erWin; ask what was actually recorded rather than assuming that every workshop visit appears.

VW Service History Check by VIN: What’s Included

Recorded services and mileage observations

Review the available service dates, workshop entries and odometer readings. Use the work description to check an important claim. If the seller mentions an oil service, brake-fluid change or another maintenance task, look for that task or request its invoice; a visit count is not an itemised record of everything done.

Technical data and factory equipment

Available vehicle information can include the model, engine, gearbox, paint, production details and original equipment. These fields describe supplied build data. They do not confirm later retrofits or the present working condition of each feature.

How to read a VW service timeline

VW Service History Check by VIN: Reading the Record

Start with three questions: does the document identify the correct vehicle, what work does each entry describe, and are its date and mileage consistent with the other evidence? Keep a general inspection separate from an entry that names a completed maintenance task.

Compare readings using the same unit, particularly for an imported Golf or another VW with kilometre-based paperwork. MOT readings and service entries are different observations; keep their dates and sources visible. Investigate an unexplained difference against the original documents rather than treating one reading as a lifetime-mileage guarantee.

The panels below use fictional teaching data, not a source report for a VW. Our VW digital service book guide explains how to apply these checks to the records returned for your own VIN.

Illustrative examples. The dates, readings and work below are fictional teaching data. These graphics are not extracts from a VW report and do not show records for a real vehicle.

Comparing dates, miles and kilometres

The example pairs 15 March 2023 with 24,180 miles (about 38,914 km), 22 September 2024 with 37,420 miles (about 60,222 km), and 8 May 2025 with 51,860 miles (about 83,461 km). Confirm the original unit, then compare the chronological entries with invoices. A reading is not a guarantee of lifetime mileage.

Understanding the recorded work

An engine oil service, a brake fluid service and a vehicle inspection describe different work. One entry does not confirm that every scheduled task was completed. Check the wording and outcome against invoices and the full source report.

Which VW records may be missing?

The VIN identifies the vehicle searched; it cannot make unrecorded maintenance appear. Age, workshop activity and the information available in the sources checked affect the result. A familiar model name or a seller’s description of “full history” does not establish that one digital search contains every service.

Keep any paper book, independent invoices and overseas documents. Ask the workshop for evidence of a missing visit and whether it made a digital entry. VW’s FAQ notes limits on what an independent repairer can print from erWin, so a partial printout should be read in context. Use our missing-records checklist to organise the next questions.

How to order, price and delivery

  1. Check the 17-character VIN on the vehicle against its registration document.
  2. Enter that VIN in the field above and add the VW report to your basket.
  3. Confirm the identifier and your email address at checkout, then complete payment.
  4. Receive the individually prepared PDF by email.

The price for one vehicle is £19.00, as shown in the purchase summary. You are buying one report for the VIN supplied.

Estimated delivery: around 120 minutes. Reports are individually prepared; the Terms and Conditions provide for delivery within 24 hours of payment confirmation. Timing depends on record availability and the external systems used.

THE RECORDS EXPLAINED

Find the VIN. Match the same vehicle.

Compare the full identifier on the vehicle with its documents before requesting records. Locations vary: check the handbook for the particular car.

An original car outline with the base of the windscreen enlarged.

Look at the vehicle

Many cars display the VIN at the base of the windscreen. Read it from the vehicle rather than relying only on the advert.

An unbranded vehicle body plate with abstract identifier marks.

Check another location

Where accessible, compare another manufacturer-marked location, such as a body plate. Use the handbook to find it.

A plain document outline with an identifier field under a magnifying glass.

Compare the V5C

Match the full VIN on the vehicle to the V5C registration document. Investigate a mismatch before proceeding.

The document drawing is an unbranded outline, not a V5C facsimile. A registration number identifies the registration; it is not the VIN.

If no service history is available

Who supplies your VW report?

VinHistory.co.uk is operated by Ohia Expert and is an independent service. Manufacturer records are the data used for the report; this does not make VinHistory a VW dealership or imply a manufacturer partnership.

Review any customer feedback displayed with the product and the operator’s contact details before ordering. Our terms explain the seller, fulfilment and order conditions.

BEFORE YOU ORDER

Your questions,
answered.

Will a VW report confirm later modifications?

Available factory equipment and technical fields describe supplied original-build information. Ask for separate evidence of retrofits, tuning or later changes and check their current condition.

Does a digital record replace earlier VW paperwork?

Keep the documents for earlier work as well. VW UK dates its move away from physical service books to May 2017; an individual vehicle’s available digital history still depends on recorded entries.

Is an inspection entry the same as a completed oil service?

Read the actual work description. An inspection or workshop visit does not by itself establish that an oil service or every additional maintenance task was completed.

Where do I enter the VIN?

Enter the 17-character VIN on this product page before adding the report to your basket, then confirm it at checkout. Check it against the car and its registration document before paying.

What happens if no service history is found?

You are eligible for a full refund if no service history information is found for your VIN. Email info@vinhistory.co.uk within 14 days with your order number and VIN. Delivered reports containing verifiable history are subject to the refund policy.
